Phil studied at the Northern Film School, where he was formally trained in Cinematography and the art of lighting. Working entirely on film formats throughout, he gained the skill and discipline of his craft. After completing the course with a distinction grade, he immediately started to work freelance as a DoP.
Phil regularly shoots Commercials and Drama, and has shot three Feature Films to date. Recently he has worked on some high profile projects, such as the BAFTA Nominated short film 'The Voorman Problem', starring Martin Freeman and Tom Hollander. Phil has had the pleasure of working internationally, shooting Features and Commercials all over the world. He has worked on projects that have been screened at film festivals in Europe and the US, including Raindance and Cannes Festivals. Phil was recently nominated for the Best Cinematography Award at the Cork film Festival 1012, for his work on 'The Voorman Problem'
As a Cinematographer, Phil believes his role is to support the Director's vision. He is a problem solver and a creative collaborator, who ties in the technical side of filmmaking to the artistic. Phil has a strong visual aesthetic and is able to put a great deal of production value on the screen, regardless of the budget.
